Institutional structure

Conference of Parties (COP)

The premier decision-making organ of the Abidjan Convention is the Conference of Parties (COP), a biennial meeting that brings together the ministers of environment and technical experts from all the countries that are party to the Convention.

National Focal Points

Article 16(2) of the Abidjan Convention provides for the designation of an appropriate national authority by each Contracting Party to be responsible for the coordination of national efforts for implementing the Convention and its related protocols. Each national authority shall serve as the channel of communication between the Contracting Party and the Organization. The Institutional strengthening through designation of focal points and establishment of a focal points forum was in consonance with the Article and requirement for representation as implemented in 2002.

Regional Coordinating Unit (RCU)

The Governments participating in the Action Plan decided to establish, upon entry into force of the Convention, a Regional Coordinating Unit, placed under the authority of UNEP, which coordinates the various activities of the Action Plan.


LME Projects

The Abidjan Convention area straddles three distinct ecosystems, namely; the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem, the Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem and the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem.


Partners/ Stakeholders of the Abidjan Convention

Pursuant of its mandate and objectives, the Abidjan Convention has established linkages with some national, sub-regional and international collaborators, partners, donors, stakeholders etc in order to facilitate the implementation of the action plan and to link-up with existing activities and programmes of other agencies and organizations.
